Women in Diplomatic Mediation (WDM) is the program of the Commission on Human Rights of the International Diplomatic Institute - an organization accredited with special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) since 2019 - designed to give visibility to women already working in the field of diplomatic mediation and conflict resolution and to promote, by creating a bridge between them, the empowerment of women and girls who want to pursue a career in diplomacy and mediation. The WDM program will focus on themes each year, chosen from the priorities indicated by the leaders who participate in it.

WDM – Women in Diplomatic Mediation was born from the need, identified as a priority by the International Diplomatic Institute, to develop awareness-raising activities to strengthen the role of women in diplomatic mediation, also with a view to achieving the sustainable development goals of the 2030 Agenda (SDG 4 “Quality Education”, SDG 5 “Gender Equality” and SDG 16 “Peace, Justice and Institutions”).

Indeed, although more than 40 years have passed since the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW, 1979) and almost 30 years since the 1995 Beijing Declaration, gender inequalities remain deeply rooted in every society.

The International Diplomatic Institute, through the WDM program, is committed to supporting and highlighting the importance of women’s contribution in promoting peace and security, proposing targeted actions that, through informal diplomacy, involve not only women but also young people, public and private institutions, and governmental and non-governmental organizations, with the common aim of implementing the highest values promoted by the United Nations Charter.

WDM – Women in Diplomatic Mediation organizes:

  • Online conferences
  • Multilateral international conferences
  • Training and advanced training courses
  • Youth exchanges
  • Workshops and laboratories

With the aim of strengthening the empowerment and global respect for women’s rights and gender equality, the WDM – Women in Diplomatic Mediation program has adopted a multi-year working plan that defines, following the guidelines of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), priority themes for discussion and action to be developed in the individual annual sessions. At the end, conclusions and recommendations on the topic discussed will be shared and transmitted to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the governments of the countries involved, and the international public at large.
